Wow! That is amazing. And what is also amazing is the way the portrait of Dad remains the same, no matter what part of his life it is coming from, or how far back it dates.

Love,

Len

Dear Len, Alex and Greg (who has already read the whole of what I am about to relate),

A truly unusual note arrived today beginning, “We have never met but I am an old friend of Len’s. We were born three days apart, grew up together in Silver Lake, and attended Holy Family and Hoban High School together…I know he went off to Princeton…Chicago, while I stayed in Ohio for med school and then moved to D.C….yesterday morning [letter dated Jan 15] I woke up [and thought of him] …at about 10:45 I went to Google and was startled and saddened to discover that in just 15 minutes, a memorial service would be held for Len.”

He adds stories of playing basketball, school band, student council, newspaper, hitchhiking, stopping after school for root beer floats. He ends: “My memories of Len are very special—he was such a smart, warm, friendly, endearing person. I know he must have been a great husband, father, attorney.” Tom Schmitt.

Jean Ann, do you remember him?

Amazing. I’ll write to him tomorrow.

Love,

Mom
